Menu Planning

I've gone back to menu planning. September through April are always so crazy busy around here that I felt that if I was going to get anywhere, I would have to start planning my menus again. This time I did it by the month, but I've made a large part of it simple.

Mondays are always spaghetti
Thursdays are either poor man's strata (I use up all our bread crusts) or chili
Friday is pizza
Saturday is Mexican
Sunday is Dutch pancakes (personally I think they stole the recipe from the French because they are actually crepes).

The days in between are usually chicken, fish, or vegetarian dishes. It depends primarily on which fresh veggies are on sale and what will compliment what. For example, right now we eat a lot of squash, sweet potatoes, and cruciferous vegetables. Actually, now that I think of it. That's likely what we will mostly eat for the rest of the winter!

Speaking of cruciferous vegetables, the girls ate broccoli yesterday and there was no tossing it in trees, gagging on it, or generally just pushing it around their plate. Two of them had seconds. We're coming along very nicely, I think.

What's on your menu these days?

  1. Yay on the broccoli! I still can't get my youngest to eat it, although he loves Imagine's broccoli soup, but my oldest is finally venturing out eating it prepared in other ways (he loves to eat it raw - no complaints about that from me!). I wish I could get myself together on menu planning. I do well for a while, then it falls off my radar.

  2. I'm still trying to get my footings on my menu planning. My first month I did a month at at time with shopping weekly. This last time I did bi-weekly. This worked better because monthly too many social things came up and I was off the planning. Bi-weekly allowed for me to have social things change.

I too made certain days of the week certin food. Tues is crock pot since we come home later from dance, Wednesday is soup and Thursday is pasta. It sure does help!

  3. We've never done menu planning! It takes time, that my mom rarely has. A few friends of hers have done "once a month cooking" though, and it was really nice.

They got together and prepared meals that they mostly froze for the whole month! I told my mom (since I watched the kids while the moms cooked) about it, and she wanted to do it.

Haha we haven't grown a garden either since I was about 3 or 4 and since we moved, there's no way we have room for one!

    Sounds delicious! And happy cooking!

P.S. I'd heard that saying many times... it should be used more often! :)

  4. This is a very clever idea, I most certainly need to consider it because it could possibly make my days run smoother.

  5. I do weekly menu planning, but it's never occurred to me to make certain days the same every week--I like it! The closest I get is usually Sunday we do a roast chicken or roast beef. Otherwise, I switch things around. But it would be nice to have set meals. I need to think about this.

Congrats on the broccoli. That's big!
