What Do You Know About Columbia?

Did you know that Columbia is home to the third largest displaced population in the world? We have all heard of the Sudanese and Angolian refugees, as well as what went on in Kosovo in 1999, but very few of us know about what is going on in Columbia. I myself did not know until very recently.

More than 1.7 million Columbians have fled their homes since 1985. Some will live in refugee camps established by aid organizations, but the majority are forced to fend for themselves.

I don't exactly understand what causes all these people to be displaced -- except that it has to do with guerillas and civil rights violations. These people are fleeing because they fear for their very lives.

We have had the pleasure of getting to know one Columbian family who has been able to flee to Canada. They have been here barely a month, so their English is minimal and unfortunately our Spanish is even worse. We speak Spanglish and use lots of gestures. We share lots of laughter and just enjoy being together. They are a beautiful family and full of love. The story of what they have been through is incredible, but not mine to tell.

Meeting them has reminded me once again of how small and selfish the world is that I live in.

  1. I certainly wasn't aware of this either! Your family has an amazing opportunity for learning about another culture and forming wonderful friendships now.

You asked about Rapadura. http://www.rapunzel.com/products/rapunzel/rapunzel_baking_rapadura.html I prefer to use it as long as I can afford it (thankfully my stockpile has been obtained on sale or markdown).
