Simple Woman's Daybook

Outside my window: overcast skies, mild temperatures, hardly a breath of wind. It's a holiday today, so I only hear the occasional car and lots and lots of singing bugs. Many of the birds have moved on to their gathering places for migration, so any bird song is absent with the exception of one brave little finch.

I am thinking: oh so many things. It's only Beans and I up yet. She is a morning person and almost always gets up when she hears me feeding the dogs, but she usually reads and leaves me to my thoughts. Some of my thoughts: school days, harvesting, chore lists, things to make and do, photos to finish up.

In the kitchen: cinnamon bun dough rising on the counter, cooked apples waiting to be sauced, the coffee pot clicking. Time to go pour myself a cup!

I am wearing: nightgown, and my ancient hot pink fuzzy housecoat. It's just cool enough that when I'm sitting around that I appreciate its warmth.

I am creating: lists for chores, menu ideas, and maybe some more scrubby squares on the needles.

I am going: to do something fun with the whole family today, to the opening assembly at the girls' school tomorrow, and to a school bbq on Friday evening, and hopefully that's IT for this week.

I am wondering: how long it will take to establish the new school routines for this year.

I am reading: Your Best Body Now by Tosca Reno. I have almost all her books. She provides good, realistic advice and wonderful instruction, as well as very good recipes that my whole family can eat.

I am hoping: that the rain holds off, so that we can do something fun yet this afternoon. If it's sunny we'll go to the beach. If it's overcast, we'll do some geocaching.

I am looking forward to: morning quiet time for devotions, and long morning walks without interruptions.

I am learning: to delegate, but it's soooo hard!

Around the house: freshly dug potatoes drying in the sink, books everywhere (as usual), an island piled with clean laundry that needs to be put away, as well as various articles of clothing hanging on the couch and love seat so they don't get wrinkled, two sleeping dogs, and one child reading on the couch.

I am pondering: the gardens. They all need some work on some level. I have some gift cards yet and I'm trying to decide between buying some new perennials or much needed organic fertilizer. Pretty or helpful? :o)

A favorite quote for today: "Commit to God whatever you do and your plans will succeed." Proverbs 16:3

A few plans for the rest of the week: baking, harvesting, canning, freezing, cleaning! Lots and lots of deep cleaning!

A peek into my day:

The bane of my existence these days. In all our sixteen years out here, we have never had so many apples! They're being sauced, pied, and buttered so far. I'm thinking maybe some chutney or preserves are in order also.

Happy Monday, dear friends and readers!

  3. I enjoy your thoughts. Haven't hit apple season quite yet around here; its coming though. Looks wonderful to have such a bumper crop. I do like apple chutney. Apple butter is also a huge favorite with my hubby. Love your early morning reader; a soothing soul I believe. Have a great week.
    Blessings,

  5. At least your apples are in good enough condition that you can give some of them away. I spend an hour a day for several weeks every summer dealing with apples that leave more on the paper than in the pot. Last year was my bumper crop. This year only two branches and the very top of the tree produced anything (thank goodness!) So, I'm wondering, why it is that with this year's reported over abundance of apples, that the orchards and grocery stores are selling them for such an outrageous price. $7 for a small basket or bag is ridiculous. Be glad you have so many.....and go ahead and share them as your friends and neighbours will be delighted.

  6. We have our own abundance of apples also...so thankful! I canned some apple pie filling with some of our apples. Fairly easy recipe; that is, of course, dependent on your family liking apple pie.
