What I Got Rid of this Year

I did the Project Simplify back in the early spring and from there, it inspired me to get working on more areas of our home including my 22 Days to Less Mess.

Since the beginning of Project Simplify, here is what I got rid of for 2011:

Four garbage bag sized bags full of adult and children's clothing, and assorted household items.

Three big bags of random garbage.

At least a six foot high pile of recycling.

Twelve (no, that is not a typo) years of Country Woman magazines.

A one year (free) subscription to a babies first year series, sponsored by some local thingy here.

One pop corn popper that suddenly decided to quit working.

One sandwich maker. It still works great, but with  nine people in the house, making toasted sandwiches two at a time just isn't going to go over well.

One second hand (from my mom) juice maker. For the two times a year I decide I want red cabbage juice, or carrot juice, it's just not worth it to have it taking up space in my cupboards.

One Japanese fighter model set -- built by Bub, but never painted.

One board game based on some movie that my my kids haven't watched and therefore playing the game is pointless.

One action game -- batteries required that rarely got played.

One box of random dishes, linens, fabrics, etc.

One LARGE bag of  towels and linens.

Four large bags of clothes for my SIL for her boys.

You know what? I'm pretty sure that if I started working my way through this house room by room, I could already get rid of more stuff again.

Isn't it a little more than ironic that I can go through my home getting rid of stuff, when even in the town near us, there are families fighting to make ends meet. Never mind people half way around the world.

It is my goal in 2012 to be far more mindful of how and where I'm spending money!

Do you have any goals (not resolutions, but goals) for 2012? I'd love to hear them!

  1. It's so good to get rid of stuff! I should bag up some stuff TODAY! Thank you for the inspiration.
Thank you for the card. It's fun to get mail. YOU are amazing. Do you sleep? I know you do, but you sure get a lot done, Deborah!

  2. Lol! Pom Pom, I've done nothing this week so far but read, and perform the necessary evil of grocery shopping.

I do think that today I should get off my butt and do some baking for the freezer before back to school creeps up on my again.

    Blessings!

  3. That is a ton of stuff! It always feels good to get rid of stuff. I got the book 'Kisses from Katie' for Christmas and I LOVE IT! It also talks about the needs of orphans, and I totally agree with you. There are families even in communities around us that also need help.

Happy reading, and good luck on your "mindful shopping"! :) that's ONE of our goals for 2012 as well. There are a few more, but I just don't know what they are yet. (probably some to do with exercising/losing weight - if you know what I mean)

    Blessings,
    ~Michlyn

P.S. Deborah - I'm so sorry, but I have a package to send to you. It meant to be sent before Christmas, but with Christmas break, the holiday preparations, and our traveling it just didn't happen. Please forgive my tardiness, and I'll be sure to send it as soon as I am home.

  4. That is a LOT of stuff! I didn't keep track of everything I got rid of but I know it was a ton of stuff. We had a garage sale and then after our move I freecycled a lot more. Just yesterday I freecycled more moving boxes.

I admit that it has been a bit of a temptation to listen to the siren song of after Christmas sales. I have not gone, but the temptation has been there.

I am not sure about new year goals yet. Maintaining my weight loss will be a big one. I need to give it more thought.

  5. We, too, will be going through our things with an eye to fitting all of our possessions into our tiny storage space while we are on furlough.

Our main goals are to finish well in the village and transition well back to the States (and thrive while we are there!).

  6. I am so with you on this! I could get rid of so much.

It's just a matter of time. I seem to do a little at a time. I caught your room by room and really like that idea because it simplifies it so as not to seem so overwhelming.

    Junk drawer...I'm coming for you!

    Thanks for the inspiration!

  8. Wow, wow, and wow! I declutter every year and always think there's not anything else I could possibly get rid of, but there always is. I've been working on my personal notebook for 2012 this month. It includes checklists of all the declutter and organization tasks I need to (and very much want to) get accomplished. I can't very well go on complaining about the state of things if I'm not willing to make effort to change what's not working.
