Square Foot Gardening

I almost gave up vegetable gardening completely this year because I'm getting very tired of weeding like crazy and getting nowhere. (Every year by June we have a frightening weedy mess, no matter how hard I try and keep up). On the other hand it seemed a little foolhardy to give it up altogether when we have so much room. We decided to look into container gardening, when a friend reccommended square foot gardening. I spent some time reading about it and we decided to give it a try. The Engineer built a frame and I then stapled landscape fabric to the bottom. I placed the whole thing in the garden in a nice sunny spot!! Well, almost! That big bushy plant in the corner is a lovage plant. It's great for soups and such -- kinda like celery. I'll have to move the lovage in the next few days.

After a second trip to the greenhouse to get more of the special soil mix, (I needed eighteen cubic feet and the bags came in 30L measurements, so I was not about to do the math on that one)I filled the box and added my plants. I have spots for a few more plants, but I'm not sure what yet. So far we have Roma tomatoes, squash, dill, lots of basil, cucumbers, zucchini, and peppers. We're all looking forward to seeing how well this works -- and to not spending endless hours baking in the sun, while pulling weeds.

Edited to add: I went to the greenhouse just before I published this and bought some cilantro (yum!!) and two butternut squash.

  1. It looks great! I read about lovage in It's A Long Road To A Tomato, but have never had it to my knowledge.

  2. I'm sighing with jealousy.

I'd like to try it... all I need to add is a 15' fence to keep the deer out.
