Book Review Saturday (Edition 12)

A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett is a fairytale like read. I adored this book and am looking forward to reading it someday to our daughters. Little Sara goes from riches to rags in a virtual heartbeat. Her tenacity  throughout the book is what had me riveted. How is it possible for one little girl to hang on to her dreams of being a princess and behaving like one when everything she once had is suddenly taken away from her -- including her beloved father? Even though she lives in a room in a cold attic with mostly little to no food, she continues to be so giving and loving to any one who is kind and loving to her in return.

Even as a young child Sara had a wonderful ability to make up grand stories to amuse herself and those around her. It is her stories and the three girls with whom she shares a friendship that enable her to make it through each miserable day.

Just when the reader thinks that things can't begin to get any worse for little Sara, they don't. Things begin to change through an unlikely friendship with the new neighbours. The story has a quite surprising and very happy ending that will have Burnett's readers beaming. A Little Princess is a beautiful book that reveals that kindness and generosity are strengths of character and are very precious. It shows us the little Sara Crewe was truly a princess in every way that counted.

If you haven't read A Little Princess before, I highly recommend it to read to yourself or as a read aloud to your children!

Enjoy!

  1. This is one of my absolute favorite books! The writing is delightful. I am so glad you were able to enjoy it. Also quite good is The Secret Garden by the same author.

  2. One of my favorites, too! Have you read the sequel to A Little Princess? It's called "Wishing for tomorrow". It's good. Not as good as the original, of course, but good just the same.

  4. I haven't read it, but it has been made into a movie at least twice (in the 80s and 90s). I think the older one is better.

Love The Secret Garden, in spite of its predictability, but it's hard to read these books to boys... ;D

I wonder if that movie with Shirley Temple is based on this book, same title.
    Probably :O)
