The September Blues

I always struggle a little with the blues in September. It's not half as bad as when I had toe send the kids to school, but it's still there. The slight weepy feeling that can hit me at the oddest times. All day today I've been trying to come up with what could be causing it.

Here's what I've concluded:

1) Lack of sleep (I've been sleeping poorly the past few nights).

2) A husband out of town.

3) That nagging desire to be supermom, (I think I better read Christine Field's book again).

4) Just way too many thoughts, ideas, concerns, and prayers tumbling about in my brain.

I love the heat and casualness of summer holidays. I think my poor body always has to adjust to the change as much as my mind. I love the late nights sitting around the fire or on our west porch reading a novel until it's too dark to see. I love the sound of the crickets and other night bugs singing their nighttime chorus, and the carefree laughter of my children at play.

However, autumn definitely carries a splendor all it's own. Walking through piles of fallen leaves, the smell of woodsmoke, bright orange pumpkins, apple cider, cool days and crisp nights. By the time it really begins to feel like fall the blues will have passed and I will be soaking in the sights, smells, and tastes of fall.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven...

  1. Gorgeous pictures as always!

Sometimes I long for autumn ... the cooler weather, changing leaves, etc. but I always find it a little difficult to imagine giving up the palm trees, beach, and ocean we have now. I want to have my cake and eat it too!

You asked about the fern spores photo I posted ... we have hundreds of ferns growing along our fenceline and in the wooded area of our property. I have no idea what specific type they are, but I do love gazing at them all.

  2. Thank you Kim!

I love ferns and have tried to grow them here, but my soil is not quite what they want.

Many of the forests around here though are filled with ferns.

In the depths of winter here, I would dearly love to live in Florida (or California, or aywhere warm, really). We visited Florida a couple of years ago, and were enthralled with the heat and the vegetation. I think one day we will become what they call around here "snowbirds" -- those that head someplace warm when winter is at its dullest.
