Conclusion: Sewing is Not My Forté

Yes, I can sew. Yes, I can (mostly) follow a pattern.  However, I delude myself into thinking that I actually like sewing. As I was sorting through and attempting to organizing my fabrics, I developed a horrible urge to sew. I knew just the project. A pair of jeans belonging to Squirt had a hole blown in the knees. I would make a skirt out of them. Fabric to match? Check. Sewing machine? Check. Bobbins? Nope. Still didn't find them, but fortunately I found one, with pink thread already wound around it. Room to sew? Definitely not! Oh that basement is beginning to drive me crazy! Oh well, there's still room at the kitchen table.

Three and a half hours later, I have this:

Seriously?! Should it really take that long to cut three rectangles (which I cheated on and used my rotary cutter), gather, stitch, and hem them to a pre-existing waist piece? Apparently if you're me, the answer is "yes!"

Now I still have the mess to clean up and somehow reattach all the hair to my head that I ripped out in the process. I think sewing is one creative outlet that I am going to be ready to give up in the not--too--distant future -- once I use up all my remaining fabric that is! Quilts anyone?

  1. This is so far superior to anything that anything that I could ever do--and my mother was a professional seamstress. I learned nothing from her.

BTW, I love the new header and colors.

Gathers and ruffles are way, way out of my skill-set!

  4. I like sewing if I can make a big mess that I don't have to clean up. It does take up a lot of space, doesn't it? The skirt IS lovely!

  5. Deborah,
I think you may be too hard on yourself. Just relax and enjoy the process and the finished product. It is a darling skirt! You are super talented. A photographer, a great writer, an organized mom who sews and quilts, you garden and put up jams and bake yummy treats, you home school your kids. Yeah, you are amazing!
