Searching for Spring

It has been sunny and mild since we arrived home from PR, but it seems it snowed quite a bit here while we were gone. I wandered around the yard searching in the melted spots for some sign of life -- a crocus perhaps, or some tulip leaves peeking out. I found nothing! Oh well, I went for a long coatless walk today and then literally laid on our asphalt driveway to soak in the heat and sunshine. The thermometer does say 11C, so we are reaching into the double digits.

Looking across our front lawn, I realized it will be awhile yet before all our snow melts.

No roasting marshmallows over a blazing fire for awhile yet.

Our square foot garden that was unsuccessful last year will be made into a hotbed this year. I can almost taste fresh greens already!

I am also diligently awaiting the arrival of our first robin or red wing black bird. I haven't heard or seen any yet, although the male cardinal has finally decided to make an appearance. When he's not visible, we can hear his song drifting across the still snow covered fields.

Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. James 5:7

On the other hand, the cool days and nights are an encouragement to keep quilting. I'm actually three weeks behind right now, but I'm not worried. I made my "quilt sandwich" today. Now I have to see if either of our machines have a quilting foot and I'll be able to do the actual quilting part. I'm a little scared of that part, so letting it rest for a few more days is quite alright with me. I'm actually piecing together another quilt. It's one I started months ago, but doing the quilt along with Randi encouraged me to get working on completing this quilt too.

  1. Well spring will come eventually nice you were able to get outside and enjoy the sun. The weather here has just been so weird lots of rain??? and we were told it never rains here and today it is very chilly and windy and then yesterday we had a small earthquake also. I thought my boys were up to something in the bedroom and I was just about to yell out to them to see why they were making the house shake when I realized hehehe it wasnt them lol!! Have a wonderful day I hope the sun shines and melts all that snow for ya!! and if it doesn't pull out your hair dryer and melt it yourself :) ~Love Heather

  2. Ok, Deborah, I am so glad to "see" you back! I am catching up with your post. First of all, I love your quilt. How great that you have the talent to put these squares together in such a lovely pattern.
Secondly, I feel for you in wanting spring to come. We generally have very mild winters here in Texas. Some years I never even wear my heavy coat. This year I wore it a lot! we are ready for spring too. This weekend I am going up to the hill country..Austin, Texas and I hear that there are wildflowers blooming. I can hardly contain my excitement!
    Great pictures!

  5. Have you ever hand quilted? It is an enormously satisfying activity. I plan to machine sew my pieces and do the quilting by hand...but then that is me...and I am the one that has yet to even begin a quilt of any size!

I liked the image of you lying on the driveway, soaking.

  7. Cathy, I did hand quilt a printed baby quilt when I was expecting Beans. I enjoyed it a lot! It was very relaxing. Only problem was I had severe carpal tunnel during that pregnancy. My hand would go numb working her quilt. Unfortunately to this day, I still get it when knitting or stitching for too long. For now though, I won't let it stop me. I just take more breaks :o). Tea anyone?

    Blessings!
    Deborah
