Nature Study: The Dark-Eyed Junco

We do not see the cute little feathered penguins (as we like to call them) until there is a good covering of snow on the ground. Once we have a couple inches of snow their visits to our feeder are as frequent as the sparrows that live here year round.

The Engineer laughed when he saw this compilation of photos. He says I should have put the feeder one at the top and the snow one at the bottom. I see what he means, but for now, it is what it is :o).

Today, the children and I pulled out our much neglected nature journals and spent some time drawing, colouring, and learning more about these feisty little birds. We are so glad they stop by our feeder and keep us entertained!

  8. Absolutely wonderful drawings in your nature journals. I have always felt a certain propensity for the little modest juncos. I love how you call them feathered penguins!

  9. I'm so glad you took pictures of the nature journals. I had some of my homeschoolers do this, too, and though they grumbled about it at times, they were so proud of the pages they had crafted when they looked back later on. Now that I am reminded of them, I want to look again, too, but I'm afraid they are not in my house any longer!
