Our "New" Classroom.

We worked in this room last year at the same time it was under construction, but then we still used school desks. My dad, who is awesome at all things home improvement related, and always has excellent ideas, built us something while our school was out for the summer.

Isn't it awesome?? I am lovin' it!! The cupboards came out of our church kitchen and the trim on the counter top is actually the tops of our church's old pews. Our church is undergoing major renovations and of course these things were being given away or thrown out to make room for the new things.

We call it The Island. It is counter height, which makes it wonderful for cutting out patterns without being bent over all the time -- and it is big enough that the material is not always sliding off one end. In all but one of the drawers and cupboards, I have stored sewing related stuff -- including my patterns and fabric. The one drawer holds all the small things that are school related: glue, scissors, pencils, pencil crayons, markers, erasers, etc.

In the center of the island sits a basket which holds more school related items: mechanical pencils, and individual pencil sharpener/eraser dodads. Just above the island is an electrical outlet, for when the children and I do crafts that require a plug in -- like a glue gun.

Currently, besides school books, there is a puzzle covering much of the counter top. I am hoping the kids will get it finished before next week -- and seeing that today is a very rainy day, that just might happen!

Have you been able to guess what it was we needed? We needed stools! Until we went and got stools, there was no where for anyone to sit.

You can probably tell from the photos that the basement is still not done. Hopefully this winter...

  5. Hey,

My subrscriber didn't update your posts, so I'm way behind. You've been busy.

I love your island - I'm even jealous. I should post a pic of my "new" schoolroom."

Did you say why you started school in Aug? I'm just curious. We always start Labour Day, but I bet it would work to start ealier, too. Everyone's ready for some predictability by mid-Aug.

    Have a good one.
