My Troope of Ragamuffins

It was one of those days where the weather was absolutely perfect! After nearly perishing from the cold on Tuesday (I know, I'm exaggerating, but it was in the single digits for sure with the wind chill!), today couldn't have been more beautiful. It was warm, but not hot. Every time I began to think it was getting hot, a gentle breeze would blow and cool me down.

I gardened a little, did some watering, played with the dog, and watched my children play. They have amazing imaginations and most of the time they play so well together. Today they were using our future rain barrels as transportation. They went to "Kingdom Come and Go as You Please" in the sky. It is, of course, on Cloud Nine! Then they went to "Kingdom Come and Go as You Please" in the Indian Ocean where they battled a giant squid. Who comes up with these ideas, I have no clue.

To celebrate the beautiful day, we ate the second half of our first watermelon of the year in the shade of our front porch. Nevermind that it was grown in a hot house in Michigan, it was delicious!!

Here is the ragtag bunch sucking back their watermelon. You work up a good appetite when you use your imagination! They were so dirty this evening, that I made them shower before they went to soccer. They would have looked like a troope of ragamuffins otherwise.

  1. Looks like they had a ton of fun and watermelon ... YUM!

I would love to know more about your rain barrels. I have been trying to convince my hubby for over 3 years now that we need something along those lines. I think this current drought we're experiencing, along with the recent wildfires (both of which are occuring every year now around this same time), finally has him seeing what a beneift this is, especially since we are really trying to build up our garden. It would be wonderful to have barrels of water to use for the garden instead of worrying about running our well dry (a shallow well) just trying to maintain a supply of food.

  2. My brother gave us the rainbarrels. They had a previous life holding something non-toxic (I can't remember what). As you can see at this point they don't get much use as rainbarrels.:-) The idea is to attatch them to our downspouts on the house and the garage (which doesn't even have an eavestrough yet) to collect the rainwater. We hope to attach a tap near the bottom of each one, but high enough that you can get a watering can under it or attatch the hose to it.

I know many nurseries now sell rainbarrels, but they are very costly! You may want to ask around to see if anyone would have some barrels similar to ours that they don't know what to do with. They would definitely be a wonderful benefit to your gardens with out depleting your well supply.
